RAW NERVE 2012 - Deadline closed

Now in its tenth year, Raw Nerve is a joint initiative of Screen Australia and Screen Development Australia (SDA) to showcase the nation’s emerging filmmaking talent.

Raw Nerve provides entry-level filmmakers with the training, mentors, resources and financial assistance to make their first low budget short film in a real industry environment. The program spans the complete filmmaking process from concept and script development though to post-production and marketing.

We encourage writer/director/producer teams to apply but will also accept applications from new writers who do not as yet have a production team attached to their project. If a writer’s script is successful in being shortlisted for the development phase, the MRC will assist the writer in optioning their script and help them attach a producer and director to their project early in this process.

Successful applicants will receive a $4000 production grant from MRC and Screen Australia plus $2500 equipment and facilities hire from MRC.

They will also receive 50% discount on designated camera hire courtesy of Picture Hire Australia with Best FX kindly providing discounted sound post to our Raw Nerve filmmakers.

Once again, the MRC will be running a series of focused workshops to assist this year’s Raw Nerve applicants

Script Development Workshop

This extremely popular two-day workshop is purposely designed to assist intending Raw Nerve screenwriters. The course will focus on the basic elements of strong drama, in particular character, conflict and journey in the short form. Participants will bring in a draft of a short screenplay they have written and have the chance to gain group feedback as well as workshop it with a professional writer. Through giving and receiving feedback, each participant will have the chance to learn further about the art of dramatic screenwriting. Participants will share feedback with their fellow writers as well as receive it.

The workshop will also include character-building exercises that will help participants refine and understand their protagonists. One-on-one time with the course co-ordinator on day two will help participants plan their story development pathway for their next draft.

Participants are then encouraged to take all feedback on board and re-write their short screenplays prior to the Raw Nerve submission deadline on May 14th. Scripts with the most dramatic potential will then be chosen to receive further development assistance through the MRC.

Only 10 minute films (12 pages max, industry formatted) will be accepted for entry as per the Raw Nerve guidelines. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop or a USB with the latest draft of their script. Only 12 participants will be accepted so REGISTER now.
