Next Step Initiative

The MRC is once again proud to launch its Next Step production initiative.

This exciting new program aims to assist ‘establishing’ MRC members develop and produce an engaging, entertaining short film – of up to 15 minutes in length in any genre – for international festival entry.

As the name suggests, Next Step acts as a ‘stepping stone’ for a filmmaking team, providing them with $25,000 to produce a quality, short film – from pitch to screen – within a fully mentored production environment.

With support from the SAFC, the MRC will one again fund one film for production investment of $15,000 cash, as well as $1,000 script development and $2,500 in-kind equipment and facilities support from the MRC.

The successful filmmakers will also receive $5,000 in-kind equipment hire and $5,000 post facilities from Picture Hire Australia and The Cutting Room, our generous industry sponsors.

Please note that this is NOT an entry-level initiative.

For your team to be eligible, both the Producer and Director must be ‘establishing’ filmmakers who have made one or more post-tertiary films with cash and/or in-kind production support from the MRC.

It is hoped that producing a Next Step film will provide the successful filmmaker with the final ‘step up’ they need to apply to the SAFC’s Short Film Fund.
